Wakeboarding is a relatively new sport that has been described as a cross between waterskiing and surfing. Men and women’s wakeboarding is becoming more and more popular all around the world as more and more people become enthralled by this beautiful sport.
Because the sport was initially male dominated, there is a common misconception that women wakeboarders are in the minority, but more and more female wakeboarders are able to hold their own against male wakeboarders. Because wakeboarding is such a creative sport, many women are showing the world just how it’s done.
Tara Hamilton was the first woman wakeboard champion in the X Games. She is still competing professionally and is ranked the world No.2 woman wakeboarder in the world! She has been credited as revolutionizing the sport for women. This young Orlando native continues to impress at international events. And many more pro women wakeboarders are following her example and giving the sport a much needed boost. Dallas Friday, Meaghan Major, Leslie Kent and Emily Copeland-Durrham are just some of the world’s most talented women’s wakeboarders.
There is no doubt about it; women wakeboarders are becoming hot stuff in the pro sporting world. Sponsorships and recognition are starting to flow for talented female wakeboarders.
Getting started is easy; all you need is some friends with a boat and some wakeboarding gear. And an open mind. Learning how to do impressive tricks takes some time and practice! Spending a few afternoons on the water with friends is a great way to see if wakeboarding is the right sport for you…without spending an arm and a leg!
Special women’s wakeboard equipment
Women wakeboarders do not need much in terms of special female gear. The wakeboard itself can be a female board, but in many cases, the standard male board is just fine. The shape and design of the wakeboard can add a lot of performance. If you are beginner, buying a specially shaped board can have you performing tricks faster than on that borrowed board of yours. Some women wakeboarders like to personalize their boards with pink; it’s a personal choice though as not all female wakeboarder like the girly look!
