Cherryvale Skateboard Company was founded by Valerie Phillips and Jason Gormley in Cherryvale, Kansas on April 12, 2006. The company just celebrated its first birthday. Cherryvale skateboard company is dedicated to the preservation of youthful idealism, naïve enthusiasm and unrealistic expectations. They have a competition that runs till the end of June 2007 that consists of designing your own skateboard. They have a show in London that runs from June29- July 28 at The Gallery, 1 st Floor 125 Charing Cross Road, London.

Skateboard companies are large and rocking. They design clothing that includes hats, t-shirts, wheels for your board, the right shoes to wear, etc., all for your benefit so that you can look and feel funky while skateboarding.

Nobody really knows where skateboards have its origin, although many stories revolve around it. Boarding was known as a type of sidewalk surfing which was done when the waves were too small to go out surfing. The first manufactured boards came out in 1965. They had inch-thick wooden boards, with narrow cast-iron trunks and had rubber wheels.

Skateboarding arrived in Europe in 1980. At that time in America and Europe it was considerer to be just another craze and not thought of as a competitive sport. The dedicated skateboarders started creating their own techniques, writing their own magazines and building their own boards and lay-outs. Skateboarding was not becoming a sport, but a lifestyle and skateboard companies were flourishing. Skateboarding was the new means of transportation. The skaters took their boards anywhere and everywhere and went through and over any obstacle.

Some of the skate board companies used maple wood to make their skateboards. They say no other material has the combination of toughness, elasticity and feel of laminated sugar maple board. The skateboard company Piumarta, was the first to put concave curves into the boards in the 80’s. The curvature strengthens the board and gives the skater more control over the board.

Skateboarding is fun; I’ve done it when I was younger and have the scars to prove it. Beware boys, this isn’t just a boy’s game, girls, like me, can play too.
