In the past, people had to build their own skateboards. They did not have the convenience of cheap complete skateboards as we do today. The concept of skateboards was really a process over time. The ever-resourceful vert skaters had discovered that swimming pools were perfect for their vert skate. The interest in skateboarding was at its highest so far and had grown so much that skate parks were built in the United States. The parks incorporated all the features for vert skate. Parks became the most popular meeting ground for all skateboarders.

During the nineteen eighties skateboarding became eclipsed by BMXing. Roller-skating was more popular than skateboarding. The skate parks had to close down and even the manufacturing of skateboards ceased. The chances of having the convenience of a cheap complete skateboard were zero.

A few skaters refused to give up and they built their own boards. They even began to write their own magazines. They are the ones who created and built half-pipes. As a result, the few skateboarders that remained did not have to rely on swimming pools for vert skate.

The skateboarders of today owe them a great debt for keeping the sport alive and flourishing. Being able to purchase a cheap complete skateboard is all down to their determination not to give up on the sport they loved.
